Rooftop vs ground-mounted solar: which is right for your business?

Few investments cut an industrial energy bill as reliably as solar. The first real decision, however, is not which brand of panel to buy, it is whether to build the system on your roof or on open land. Both routes deliver clean, low-cost generation for 25 years or more, yet they suit very different sites, budgets and goals. Here is how we help clients choose.

When rooftop solar wins

For most factories, warehouses and commercial buildings, the roof is a large, unused asset sitting directly above the load. Industrial rooftop solar turns that idle area into generation without buying or leasing a single square metre of extra land. Because the power is produced where it is consumed, transmission losses are minimal and the system offsets the expensive daytime demand that drives up your bill.

Rooftop projects also tend to move quickly. Approvals are simpler, civil work is limited, and a well-planned installation can be sequenced around your production schedule so there is no disruption to operations. The main constraints are the strength and orientation of the roof and shading from nearby structures, all of which we assess before finalising the layout.

When ground-mounted solar wins

When you need megawatt-scale capacity, or your roof is too small, weak or shaded, a ground-mounted plant on open land is the stronger option. With full control over tilt, spacing and orientation, ground-mounted arrays deliver the highest yield per installed kilowatt, and they can host single-axis trackers that follow the sun to lift annual generation even further.

Ground-mounted plants are also the natural home for battery storage and for wind-solar hybrids, since there is room to expand. They demand more civil and structural engineering, a longer approvals cycle and a power evacuation plan, but for large captive or utility-scale requirements the economics are compelling.

How to decide

In practice the choice comes down to a few questions:

  • How much capacity do you actually need, in kilowatts or megawatts?
  • How much strong, unshaded roof area is available, and what is its structure?
  • Do you own or have access to nearby open land?
  • Do you want to add storage or wind generation in future?
